MUNICIPAL BOARDS & COMMISSIONS

The City of Laurens is committed to community involvement and governance through various boards and commissions. These groups play a crucial role in advising the City Council and managing specific aspects of city operations. Below is a list of our key boards and commissions

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals reviews and decides on appeals regarding zoning decisions made by city officials. This board ensures that the zoning ordinances are applied fairly and provides a platform for residents to contest zoning rulings that affect their property or community.

Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission serves as an advisory committee to the City Council on matters related to preserving Laurens’ historical heritage. The commission reviews and approves changes to historic properties, ensuring that modifications align with the community’s commitment to preserving its historical buildings and landmarks.

Laurens Public Housing Authority

The Laurens Public Housing Authority oversees the provision of affordable housing options for residents. This board is responsible for managing housing developments, ensuring compliance with federal housing regulations, and improving living conditions for low-income families in Laurens.  The Public Housing Authority operates independently from the City of Laurens, but members of its Board of Directors are appointed by the Mayor and City Council.

City Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is responsible for guiding the growth and development of the city. This commission reviews development proposals, updates the city’s comprehensive plan, and makes recommendations to the City Council on land use, zoning changes, and urban planning initiatives.

Laurens Commission of Public Works

The Laurens Commission of Public Works (CPW) is a publicly elected board of Commissioners which was established by the City of Laurens in 1922 to oversee the city's water, sewer, electricity, and natural gas services. The CPW ensures the provision of essential utilities, manages infrastructure projects, and works to improve the efficiency and reliability of public services for all residents.
